Shagotom! We are all welcome in friendship with Jesus

Shagotom! “Shagotom”, meaning “Welcome”, is the name of a new and beautiful initiative that is taking its first steps in the mission of Saint Michael the Archangel in Kamudpur. It is a form of support offered to the children, boys, and girls of the primary and middle schools of five villages — though this number will certainly grow — to help them with homework and to study those subjects in which they struggle the most.

The families of these children are very busy with hard work in the fields and cannot dedicate time to their little ones in the afternoon… Their own poor homes do not provide an environment suitable for studying.

Shagotom works like this: in the afternoon, once or twice a week, some young people and adults give a bit of their time to the children of these villages — in the tea plantations and in the cultivation of “paan” leaves — to accompany them in their studies and to play with them. The prayer at the beginning and at the end of Shagotom explains the source of this initiative in which both young and old are involved: “We are all welcome in friendship with Jesus,” reads the subtitle. A very simple experience of sharing that becomes a precious opportunity for encounter, where studying is lived as an act of love.
